The Poet as a Storyteller
Instructor: Karen Johnson
3 part  Storyteller as a Poet Series.
#1 Poetry vs Prose
Date: Saturday, July 20
Time: 12-1:30pm
Ages: 16+
Participants will discuss the difference between telling a story in prose and telling in poetry. By necessity we will discuss what makes a poem, a poem, rather than a bit of prose. Participants will choose a story with which they are familiar to retell in poetry.

#2 EkphrasticPoetry
Date: Saturday, July 17
Time: 12-1:30pm
Ages: 16+

Participants will discuss ekphrastic poetry; that is, poetry inspired by a visual work of art. We will be encouraged to look beyond the “pretty picture” to imagine what might be happening in the work, and write the story of that vision.

#3 Writing Your Own Poetry
Date: Saturday, July 24
Time: 12-1:30pm
Ages: 16+

Participants will discuss their own story, and how to present it in poetry in such a way as to make it resonate with others.

Samples from the Instructors:
Icarus had dreams of flying
sometimes late at night the waves soughing
nuzzling the island beach in darkness
or early before the stars
were altogether paled into the bluing sky
before the seabirds woke to curse
and scold the boats in harbor
Sometimes in this soft time
when no breeze twitched a leaf
and all was cool and clean
he dreamed he flew

– excerpt from Flying by Karen G. Johnson

Sand Yachting
After the oil painting After the Fog
by Marcelino Herrera Vegas

How perfectly adventurous
and modern speeding
along the beach
with the wind
filling the sail
Emmett manning the tiller
while Phoebe Sara and I
strove to sit proud
never showing a nerve
Emmett called us his
beautiful ballast
though in the end
gave it up to marry Phoebe
How fond and silly the memory
now when roadsters
travel at 50 miles per hour
and airplane travel
is not uncommon.
– Karen Gronback Johnson

Where No Compass Guides
after a watercolor Road Through
Indiantown by Mike Eagle
When he left home he knew
his way to where
the striper were running
in the channel off the wooden pier
big ones as the water warmed
They’d have a fine dinner
then striper bathed in butter
He’d use mackerel for bait
his old reel the one so easy
to his hand
But in the puddled parking lot
while clouds confuse a disenchanted
sky bait and reel and fish forgotten
all he can do is stand
holding fast some line or painter
which? until his old dog
patiently proceeds
to lead him home.
– Karen Gronback Johnson
