Writers To Hold Forth at CCSA

Ridgeline Writers will host an afternoon reading on Sunday, November 17, at the Chestnut Creek School of the Arts on Main Street in Galax. There is no admission fee for this event.

The program will start at 2:00 p.m., and will feature the poetry, fiction, and essays of members of this closed writing group.

The readings will begin with a selection of one of the group’s newer members, Robert McKinney. McKinney is a career journalist. Much of his work has focused on the outdoors and outdoors sports, including extended reports of sport fishing around the world. McKinney has also authored two novels in the crime/detective genre and wrote the authorized biography of Barter founder Robert Porterfield. He recently finished a full-length historical novel set during the Civil War that features the Battle of Saltville.

McKinney is a native of Sugar Grove.

Local writer Jeff Sebens will follow McKinney. Sebens is well known for his work as a musician and luthier, as well as for his performances with actor Barbara Bates Smith as they have toured the country in two-person shows about “Granny D” and the characters of authors Lee Smith and Ron Rash, among others. Sebens is admired for his poems about nature and for his narratives that focus on current issues through fiction.

Deborah Clark will read from stories that will be included in her second book, due to be published in Spring 2020. Her first book, Friend, Foe, or Family, also a collection of short stories, was published by Human Error Publishing this year.

Poet Karen Johnson will also be reading from a book-in-progress, a collection of poems that features works in groups she has titled “Spirit,” “Journey,” and “Story.” Johnson says these groupings reflect her life’s experience as well as the subjects of the individual poems.

Richard Rouse will wrap up the program, offering selections from his collection of essays and short stories. Rouse is known throughout the region as a storyteller. He has one book in print, The Welcome Home Door, and is currently putting together another volume of his work.

Joyce Rouse will emcee the event.

Refreshments will be offered after the readings, and books by Rouse, Clark, and Robert Merritt will be available for purchase and signing.
