How do you develop an initial idea into a fully finished graphic novel? Published YA author and selftaught cartoonist Laura Lee Gulledge walks you through her intuitively developed creative process (rooted originally in sketchbooks) in this inspiring & informative presentation! She shares insights into both the writing & development side of the process as well as the illustration & production side. She shares personal stories, real world advice, visual storytelling basics, and behind-the-scenes process examples from her latest graphic novel The Dark Matter of Mona Starr. Plus, Laura Lee will answer individual questions, Especially if participants have a graphic novel idea they wish to develop.

Laura Lee Gulledge
Artist, Author, Educator is the Eisner Award nominated author and illustrator of mental health inspired YA graphic novels The Dark Matter of Mona Starr (April 2020, Abrams Books), Page by Paige, and Will & Whit, as well as the interactive Sketchbook Dares: 24 Ways to Draw Out Your Inner Artist. Her Will & Whit graphic novel musical has recently been adapted into a virtual production for youth to perform in quarantine, which is now available for licensing. Laura Lee is also a passionate teaching artist with an MA in Art Education from James Madison University (2001) who has taught in over a dozen states as well as abroad sharing her love of visual storytelling & Artner love. She currently teaches through the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, The Fralin Museum of Art, and the Virginia Commission of the Arts. She currently lives in Charlottesville, Virginia where she posts new art & adventures weekly in her blog at
